The film, a Walt Disney release, reunites Depp and director Gore Verbinski
I watched this clip about half a dozen times this moring. I’m excited. I love westerns and, as you know by now, I’m always excited when a new Johnny Depp movie comes out. I have been especially eager to see what he does as Tonto. He is barely recognizeable under all the makeup.
“The Lone Ranger” reunites Johnny with director Gore Verbinski, who also directed the first three “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, and Bruckheimer, executive producer of all the “Pirates” movies. Helena Bonham Carter, who has co-starred with Johnny in nearly all of his Tim Burton produced films, including “Alice in Wonderland” and “Sweeny Todd,” is also part of the cast.
From the beginning, Johnny promised to bring Tonto out from the shadows of The Lone Ranger and portray him in a more positive light.
But since the first photo there has been concern that Johnny, who is part Native American, was mocking American Indians and turning Tonto into a role more along the lines of Capt. Jack Sparrow.
If you’re interested in knowing more about his makeup and the crow on his head, a couple of months ago Johnny explained the look to Entertainment Weekly. It is inspired by a painting he saw. “The Lone Ranger” is scheduled for a July 3 release.
