What in the world is Dapper Day?

Ever hear of Dapper Day at Disneyland?

Me either, until the other day when I overheard fellow reporter Mariecar Mendoza talking about a friend who had gone.

Curiosity piqued, I Googled Dapper Day Disneyland and found an actual website, www.dapperday.com/, with photos posted from the Feb. 5 event, tips for how to dress and even where to find some clothing.

The website also offers a link to a Facebook page.

It’s not a special event requiring special admission or invitations, it’s just people getting dressed up to go to Disneyland  —  just as they did when the theme park first opened in 1955.

If you look at vintage Disneyland photos, women are in dresses, many also wearing gloves and hats, while men are in suits and ties. Children were also dressed in their Sunday best.

Quite a difference from today’s far more casual shorts, T-shirts, sandals and jeans  —  worn by men and women.

Dapper Day is held twice a year, a spring all-day happening in February is celebrated at all Magic Kingdom parks worldwide, and a fall, evening event that’s currently planned just for the Disneyland resort. No date has been announced for the fall event.

So, just when I think I know everything there is to know about Disneyland, I learn something new and amazing.
